Outloved shows the journey of its protagonist and her struggle with identity in a time when parochial laws have tampered her existence as a citizen. The documentary explores the identity struggle largely reflected by women of Shaheen Bagh who are forming resistance to demand their sense of belonging in a country that despises their existence. In December 2019, the Government of India passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill, excluding Muslims from citizenship pathways. The idea of losing every right—property, vote, movement—is one probable outcome the Muslim community faces. In the midst of protest and the country being vigilante, we see Aman, a film-maker whose identity is torn with the political uprising in the country. Her identity slowly becomes synonymous with protest at Shaheen Bagh. The documentary does not have finite resolution—it leaves with uncertainty about the future predicament of Indian Muslim identity.
