Women's Bodies Through AI

As AI becomes increasingly ubiquitous, it is imperative that we critically analyze its impact. Generative models like ChatGPT and image generators are trained on internet archives that present a range of issues—particularly when examining the impact on communities whose work lacks written documentation. I examine this through the lens of the female body, asking ChatGPT to provide insights on women's experiences from the 1950s onward—defining the female body within the context of various stages of the feminist revolution. For the installation, I read these definitions in front of a green screen while archival footage of the women's movement played in the background. The chatbot defines a woman based on Chromosomes, Reproductive System, Secondary Sexual Characteristics, Hormonal Profile and Body Composition—definitions that can be exclusionary and limiting, particularly for trans bodies. The exhibition was designed using three screens, with individual videos playing on each screen in conversation with each other.
